#BDS: Israel Philharmonic Orchestra at the Proms, London

"The Proms is an annual musical event at the Royal Albert Hall in London. I didn't know but apparently it is organised by the BBC but now I do know I am not surprised that this year they have invited the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra to perform.  Here's a letter in yesterday's Independent protesting at the BBC siding with the racist war criminals of the State of Israel yet again:

Proms exploited for arts propaganda campaign

As musicians we are dismayed that the BBC has invited the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra to play at the Proms on 1 September. The IPO has a deep involvement with the Israeli state – not least its self-proclaimed "partnership" with the Israeli Defence Forces. This is the same state and army that impedes in every way it can the development of Palestinian culture, including the prevention of Palestinian musicians from travelling abroad to perform."

#BDS: Petition & Open Letter to Mona Eltahawy

"In February 2011, Mona Eltahawy accepted an invitation to a J-Streetconference in which she alleged that the Egyptian uprising of 25th January - 11th February 2011 was solely about internal issues and that it had nothing to do with Israel
or the United States and its imperial control over Egypt and the wider
Middle East. Indeed, she explicitly said "not one country's flag was
burned... not one anti-Israeli or anti-American sentiment was
expressed", and that Egyptians and other Arabs will embrace the Zionists
of J-Street, and Israeli Jews more generally, should they "march for
Palestinian freedom and dignity".

We,
the undersigned, declare with emphasis the falsehood of both
statements. While the first statement is easily falsified through a
cursory review of photographic and journalistic evidence from the 18-day
uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak, the second statement is falsified
in principle owing to the fact that Mona Eltahawy is NOT an elected
spokesperson, negotiator or representative of ANY Egyptian or other Arab
movement, nor is she connected in any substantive way to any of the
active Egyptian groups that are associated with the 25th January
revolution, whether through the official, state-recognized 25th January
Youth Coalition or through other political and social movements on the
ground. In short, Mona Eltahawy speaks only for herself and is not an
elected or legitimate spokesperson for public opinion in Egypt,
Palestine or elsewhere in the Arab or Muslim world."

#BDS: Why boycott #Israel?

"Author and history professor Mark LeVine speaks with sociologist Lisa Taraki, a co-founder of the Palestinian campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel.

Mark LeVine: What is the "Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions" movement and how is it related to the academic and cultural boycott movement? How have both evolved in the past few years in terms of their goals and methods?

Lisa Taraki: The BDS movement can be summed up as the struggle against Israeli colonisation, occupation and apartheid. BDS is a rights-based strategy to be pursued until Israel meets its obligation to recognise the Palestinian people's inalienable right to self-determination and complies with the requirements of international law.

Within this framework, the academic and cultural boycott of Israel has gained considerable ground in the seven years since the launching of the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) in 2004. The goals of the academic and cultural boycott call, as the aims of the Palestinian Civil Society Call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions issued in 2005, have remained consistent: to end the colonisation of Palestinian lands occupied in 1967; to ensure full equality of Palestinian citizens of Israel and end the system of racial discrimination; and to realise the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN Resolution 194."

#BDS: Boycott #Israel campaign targets London's Hatton Gardens

Boycott Israel campaign targets London's Hatton Gardens

"London's Hatton Gardens is being targeted this weekend to highlight the deceptions of the Kimberley Process, which tracks the trading of rough diamonds for illicit purposes but excludes Israeli Blood Diamonds.

The international Boycott, disinvestments and Sanctions (BDS) campaign is being joined by Palestinian groups to raise awareness about Israel's huge diamond industry funding for its illegal occupation and human rights abuse.

Sean Clinton, who has been leading the Boycott Israeli Diamonds campaign in Ireland, said that both jewellers and the public at large were being targeted at Hatton Gardens on Saturday because it was “one of the major hubs of the global diamond industry.”

#BDS: Anti-Israeli campaigners protest in Sydney #Australia

"A protest took place for activists arrested for their involvement in boycott Israel activities. A number of groups have been formed in Australia dedicated the call for boycott, divestment and sanctions, or BDS, from a broad cross-section of Palestinian organisations in 2005.

On July 1st the Victorian police launched what protesters described as an unprovoked attack on a peaceful demonstration outside the Max Brenner cafe in Melbourne. 19 people were arrested in what protesters believe is an attempt to intimidate the BDS, which has been growing in Australia. Two Sydney activists were arrested on July 9 at a similar protest. The activists face up to $32,000 in fines. On Tuesday 9th August, 4 of the arrested activists in Melbourne were re-arrested in dawn raids for allegedly breaching their bail conditions by attending another BDS protest. $18,000 in surety had to be paid before the police would release them. "

#BDS: Why We Should Boycott #SodaStream

"SodaStream, a home seltzer machine made in the West Bank settlement of Mishor Edomim. Situated atop land confiscated from Palestinians, Mishor Edomim is an industrial park where manufacturers receive tax breaks and other incentives from the Israeli government. Like most settlement goods, SodaStream is mislabeled as a product of “Israel,” although Mishor Edomim is beyond Israel’s internationally recognized boundaries. Generally speaking, in addition to violating international law, settlements splice up the West Bank with a system of settler-only roads that cage Palestinians into ever-shrinking areas; create a two-tiered legal system of military rule for the occupied and civilian rule for the occupiers; and appropriate scarce Palestinian water resources."

#BDS: #Australia Unionist's BDS support puts Labor on the spot

"A PROMINENT unionist has been revealed as a key supporter of the pro-Palestinian campaign attacking firms with links to Israel, exposing Victorian Labor's leadership to further embarrassment.

Former Victorian Trades Hall Council president Kevin Bracken yesterday strongly supported the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign.
Mr Bracken said the Maritime Union of Australia Victorian branch backed the boycott and confirmed that he was a keynote speaker supporting the campaign last year. The MUA, of which he is Victorian secretary, also had allowed its rooms to be used for the campaign."

#BDS: Boycott Israel protest in Brisbane Tomorrow at Max Brenner Store

"A protest in support of Palestinian rights will be held in Brisbane on Saturday August 27 as part of the international campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against apartheid Israel.

The protest will gather in South Brisbane with a march to the Israeli owned Max Brenner chocolate store. The global chain of stores is owned by Israel’s second largest food company, the Strauss Group, which boasts of its support for the Israeli military occupation forces.

According to Justice for Palestine activist, Kathy Newnam, “The protest will seek to highlight the reality of life in Palestine under military occupation. It will combat the lies and misinformation and the continual mantra by politicians and the corporate media about the supposed need for “balance”.

“Just look at what is happening in Gaza right now. Israel has launched a bombing campaign that has killed at least 20 people in the past week. Israel claims that this brutality is a response to an attack on a bus which killed eight Israelis. The corporate media repeats this claim uncritically under the guise of “balance” despite the fact that Israel is carrying out a brutal form of collective punishment that is completely illegal under international law."

#BDS: Each Israeli action creates support for BDS – a strategy, not a goal

(...)

The 2005 Palestinian civil society call for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) marked the first anniversary of the ICJ opinion, becoming another strand in Palestinian nonviolent resistance that included the popular struggle against Israel’s wall in the Palestinian villages directly impacted by its route.
International solidarity activists flocked to both the popular struggle and BDS. However, while it takes time and money to travel to Palestine, anyone can join a boycott or divestment campaign, or lobby for state sanctions wherever they live. This is a strength of the global BDS campaign. Others include the fact that the campaign is Palestinian-led, and those whose rights have been violated are now gradually imposing their agenda on a sterile, U.S.-Israeli led process.

I did an Internet search, and found this link, where the owner of Gloria Jeans is speaking to the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce. Check out their logo—after Palestine, Australia! Note too that the press release on this page only lists a "business partner". Shame of shames, that would be Nabi Saleh, from Iran. #BDS: The Black Liberation Movement and Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions: Lessons and Applications for the Palestinian Liberation Movement

"The Palestinian Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions or BDS movement, launched in 2005 to uproot the zionist settler-colonial project and dismantle the Israeli apartheid state following the various setbacks to the Palestinian liberation movement stemming from the Oslo accords, is rapidly growing into a powerful international political force. As the movement continues to grow and expand it is bound to encounter more obstacles and roadblocks. One way to defeat these limitations is to study and learn how other peoples' movements that have employed BDS strategies and tactics on an extensive level organized themselves to overcome or maneuver around the roadblocks on their path. One such movement is the Black Liberation Movement (BLM) in North America. The BLM has employed BDS strategies and tactics extensively for the greater part of the last 200 plus years in its unfinished question for liberation. What follows is a brief summary of the BLM's experience and a short exploration of some of the lessons learned from this extensive experience."

#BDS: American "Hands of Peace": Normalization of Israeli Oppression

"It has come to our knowledge that Hands of Peace, a non-profit “dialogue-based,” American organization identifying itself as “an interfaith organization developing peace-building and leadership skills in Israeli, Palestinian and American teens through the power of dialogue and personal relationships” has started recruiting teenagers from The Gaza Strip. This is supposed to be an experience which seeks to “foster long-term peaceful coexistence among Jewish-Israelis, Arab Citizens of Israel, and Palestinians by bringing together teenagers from the Middle East with American teenagers in an interfaith setting.1 (Emphasis added).

The Palestinian Students' Campaign for the Academic boycott of Israel and Palestinian Youth Against Israeli Apartheid consider this an act of normalization that violates the boycott guidelines issued by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI)2. HOP seems to ignore the fact that the reason why Palestinians and Israelis cannot get together is because the former are colonized and the latter are settler colonists. It also ignores the fact that Israel is an apartheid state, as former American president Jimmy Carter and anti-Apartheid activist and Nobel Laureate Desmund Tutu called it; a state that discriminates not only against the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, but also against the 1.2 million Palestinians living in it as third class citizens. "

#BDS: Dropping the last mask of democracy

""You should definitely postpone your book launch in Jerusalem," warned a close friend who felt that the planned event for launching my recently published book on the Palestinian-led movement for boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) against Israel might be too risky in light of the recently passed Israeli law that effectively bans support for the thriving boycott movement. At the packed bookshop-cafe in occupied East Jerusalem last Thursday, however, the engaged and Italian-coffee scented atmosphere was almost jubilant, as if declaring a collective defiance of Israel's latest draconian measure.

Much controversy has arisen since the Israeli parliament passed legislation that would effectively criminalise support for any boycott against Israel or its institutions, under threat of heavy penalties and worse, without the need to prove "guilt". Dozens of Israeli civil society organisations and leading legal scholars, including many opposing the boycott, have resolutely opposed this exceptionally authoritarian law on diverse grounds, ranging from the most principled to the downright pragmatic."
